Varietal Bonarda
Bonarda (also known as Charbono) originated in France but is now mostly planted in California and Argentina. Bondarda thrives in Argentine where it grows alongside Malbec- the grape that Argentina is famous for. Not coincidentally Bonarda blends perfectly with Malbec! Like Malbec- Bonarda produces fruity, smooth red wines with flavours of plum, cherry cardamom and fig. Bonarda has a dry finish with medium, soft tannins.
Varietal Cabernet Sauvignon
The benchmark wine of France’s Bordeaux region and California, Cabernet contends as the greatest red wine of the world and is grown in almost every winemaking region on the planet. Cabernet typically features notes of black fruits, firm tannins and is often oaked. Each growing region typically has its own ‘interpretation’ of this impressive wine.
Varietal Malbec
Native to the Bordeaux region of France, Malbec is one of the 6 original grapes that go into the classic Bordeaux blend. It has since become Argentina’s signature wine and is now being found in other regions of the world. Malbec wines are rich, luscious and pair fabulously with beef.
Varietal Syrah
Due to the popularity of Australian wines this grape is now probably better known to most wine drinkers as Shiraz, however in France (its original home) and most growing regions of the world it is still known as Syrah. While largely a blending grape in the Rhone region wines of France, most other growing regions feature Shiraz on its own. Look for nice berry flavours with a lively spiciness- very enjoyable.
Sweetness Dry
Dry wines like Cabernet and Pinot Grigio have no perceptible amount of sweetness to the drinker and will often be detected as having a drying character in the mouth.
Body Medium
Great for food, medium bodied wines typically have alcohol levels below 14% and less oak.
Oak Medium
Most red wines will have at least a medium oak level as it is an expected part of the taste of a red wine.
